Frequently Asked Questions

What is the duration of an appointment?

The duration of each appointment is fifty minutes.

What is the cost of an appointment?

A standard consultation with Joel (50 mins) is presently charged at $210. Please note that from the 4th of January 2021 the fee will be $220. This is the first fee increase in over three years and is in line with CPI.

Are Medicare rebates available?

Joel is a Medicare provider. Clients referred by psychiatrists or paediatricians, or by General Practitioners under a Mental Health Care Plan, are eligible for a Medicare rebate for up to twenty appointments per calendar year – the government temporarily doubled the number of available appointments in the 2020 Federal Budget. The standard rebate for an appointment is $77.10. Those referred clients who have reached the Medicare Safety Net for any given calendar year receive this standard rebate plus 80% of the gap. Medicare rebates are processed at the time of the appointment once payment has been made and will appear in your bank account if it is registered with Medicare. In order to process rebates we need to have your Medicare card details securely recorded in our practice management software. We do not need to know bank details as rebates are paid directly by Medicare.

If you are wondering whether you are eligible for a Medicare referral, please discuss this with your doctor to enable them to make a decision regarding eligibility. The decision regarding Referral/Care Plan eligibility is made exclusively by your doctor. Please note that no referral is required in order to seek assistance at Brisbane Family Therapy Clinic. Without a referral, however, no Medicare rebate applies.

Who should attend the first appointment?

Brisbane Family Therapy Clinic provides counselling and therapy services to individuals, couples and families.

Joel has extensive professional experience (over twenty years) and is knowledgeable regarding the factors that contribute to successful therapy. In many instances, Joel will discuss your presenting concerns with you over the telephone prior to your first appointment, and, if necessary, will help you decide who should attend the first appointment.

Joel sees many individual clients for therapy. As a general rule, however, if the referral is for marriage counselling or couple therapy, it is best that both partners attend the first appointment together, and if the presenting problem is associated with a child or adolescent, the first appointment will need to be attended by both parents/carers (if there are two parents/carers). We understand that every presenting problem is unique, and that families are constituted in many and varied ways. Joel will help make decisions regarding the attendance of any children/teenagers; sometimes, when the primary concern is for a child or adolescent, it is best for a whole family to attend the initial appointment together, while at other times it is best for parents to attend an appointment in the absence of their children.

Again, any questions regarding attendance can be discussed with Joel before and during the course of therapy.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is necessary to access services at Brisbane Family Therapy Clinic. Medicare rebates are available however, if a client is referred by a General Practitioner under a Mental Health Care Plan, or by a psychiatrist or paediatrician. Referral eligibility is always determined by your doctor.

Are private health fund rebates available?

A small number of private funds provide rebates for services provided by BFTC, though most clients access rebates through Medicare if they are eligible. Again, please be aware that no referral is required, though no rebate is available without a referral.

Is parking available?

There is ample paid parking close to the clinic. There is a multi-story council car park directly across the road from Silverton Place which can be accessed from Turbot Street. There is also metred street parking on Wickham Tce, Turbot St, and other nearby streets.

Steps to/from Central train station are directly across the road from the clinic.

What if I need to change or cancel an appointment?

Once you book a session, that time is set aside exclusively for you. A reminder text message will be sent to your nominated mobile phone contact number in advance of your appointment, unless you request that these reminders are not sent. Please do not rely on these SMS reminders to keep track of your appointments. There is always a waitlist of clients awaiting appointments, and it can be difficult to fill an appointment at very short notice. If, for some reason, you need to cancel or postpone any future appointments, please call (DO NOT SMS) to provide notice of cancellation as per table below. If this notice is not provided a late cancellation fee (half of the full appointment fee $105.00) will apply. No Medicare rebate applies to this cancellation fee.
