Frequently Asked Questions

What is the duration of an appointment?

The duration of each appointment is fifty minutes.

Are Medicare rebates available?

All BFTC practitioners are Medicare providers. Clients referred by psychiatrists or paediatricians, or by General Practitioners under a Mental Health Care Plan, are eligible for a Medicare rebate for up to ten appointments per calendar year. The standard rebate is approximately $74.80. Those referred clients who have reached the Medicare Safety Net for any given calendar year receive this standard rebate plus 80% of the gap. Medicare rebates can be processed at the time of the appointment once payment has been made.

If you are wondering whether you are eligible for a Medicare referral, please discuss this with your doctor to enable them to make a decision regarding eligibility. Please note that no referral is required in order to see a therapist at Brisbane Family Therapy Clinic. Without a referral, however, no Medicare rebate applies.

Who should attend the first appointment?

Brisbane Family Therapy Clinic provides counselling and therapy services to individuals, couples and families.

All therapists working at BFTC have extensive professional experience (at least twenty years) and are knowledgeable regarding the factors that contribute to successful therapy. In many instances, your therapist will discuss your presenting concerns with you over the telephone prior to your first appointment, and, if necessary, will help you decide who should attend the first appointment. Therapists at Brisbane Family Therapy Clinic see many individual clients for therapy. As a general rule, however, if the referral is for marriage counselling or couple therapy, it is best that both partners attend the first appointment together, and if the presenting problem is associated with a child or adolescent, the first appointment will need to be attended by both parents/carers (if there are two parents/carers). We understand that every presenting problem is unique, and that families are constituted in many and varied ways. Your therapist will help make decisions regarding the attendance of any children/teenagers; sometimes, when the primary concern is for a child or adolescent, it is best for a whole family to attend the initial appointment together, while at other times it is best for parents to attend an appointment in the absence of their children. Again, any questions regarding attendance can be discussed with the therapist before and during the course of therapy.

Do I need a referral

No referral is necessary to access services at Brisbane Family Therapy Clinic. Medicare rebates are available however, if a client is referred by a General Practitioner under a Mental Health Care Plan, or by a psychiatrist or paediatrician. Referral eligibility is always determined by your doctor.

Are private health fund rebates available?

A small number of private funds provide rebates for services provided by BFTC, though most clients access rebates through Medicare if they are eligible. Again, please be aware that no referral is required, though no rebate is available without a referral.

Is parking available?

There is ample paid parking close to the clinic. There is a multi-story council car park directly across the road from Ballow Chambers which can be accessed from Turbot Street. There is also metred street parking on Wickham Tce, Turbot St, and other nearby streets.

Steps to/from Central train station are directly across the road from the clinic.

What if I need to change or cancel an appointment?

It is never a problem if you need to change or cancel an appointment. You just need to telephone reception by midday on the business day before the appointment you need to cancel – please do not text or email regarding cancelations. The Clinic always has a waitlist and we are almost always able to fill appointments if we have this much notice. If less notice (or no notice) is provided, you will be charged 50% of the full appointment fee. No Medicare rebate applies to this cancelation fee.
